COMMUNITY DANCE WORK

Eliot Smith Dance (ESD) is offering an opportunity for people who identify as women, age 40+ (but not exclusively) living in South East Northumberland and the surrounding areas to take part in the creation of ESD’s new community dance work, HAWAY THE LASSES.

As part of the re-staging of Eliot Smith’s PITMAN, the community dance work commemorates the women involved in the Miners’ Strike of 1984-85, which took place forty years ago.
This collaboration is intended to encourage a healthy opportunity to be active, is a confidence-building experience, with the added benefit of meeting people and working with supportive professional dancers.
The workshops will include a warm-up class, followed by simple choreography. All will be guided by ESD Creative Director Eliot Smith.

Anyone interested should be available to attend four in-person workshops at Woodhorn Museum, Ashington on:
Sunday 20 October 2024, 10.30am - 12 noon
Sunday 27 October 2024, 10.30am - 12 noon
Sunday 03 November 2024, 10.30am - 12 noon
*Saturday 09th November 2024, 10.30am - 1pm

OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS TO JOIN THE CAST OF PITMAN

Eliot Smith Dance (ESD) is offering the opportunity for children and adults to help bring the story of the Pitman Painters to life through dance.
Choreographed by the Company’s Creative Director Eliot Smith, PITMAN tells the story of the miners and their community through dance interpretations of ten of the Ashington Group paintings that are on permanent display at Woodhorn Museum.
This unique opportunity is for children aged 10-16 and adults aged 19+ who live in Northumberland, Newcastle upon Tyne, or the surrounding areas to take part in one of the sections, ‘The Xmas Tree’, dancing their own contribution to the story as they join ESD dancers in this affectionate tribute to the Ashington Group.
The participants will rehearse alongside Eliot Smith and ESD dancers, supported by the Company’s Education and Beyond co-ordinator Yamit Salazar. Those involved will receive an appropriate food and travel allowance.
No stage or dance experience is required, but participants must be comfortable performing in front of an audience. The role will involve some physical effort, and Eliot Smith and Yamit Salazar will work with everyone’s individual needs and abilities.
Anyone interested in finding out more about the production and the involvement needed should register to attend the online Welcome Workshop on:
Youth online Welcome Workshop, Saturday 05 October 2024, 10.00 am – 10.40 am
Adult online Welcome Workshop, Saturday 05 October 2024, 11.00 am – 11.40 am
This online Welcome Workshop will provide an opportunity to meet Eliot Smith and Yamit Salazar, find out more about the production, and to ask any questions.
Following the workshop two children and two adults will be selected to take part in the performance at the Alnwick Playhouse on Friday 06 and Saturday 07 December 2024.
